Farewell for Another Year
The 2016 Alice Springs Masters Games is drawing to a close.
The 30th anniversary of one of the Northern Territory’s most iconic social and sporting events has been a huge success.
The quality of competition continued to improve this year. Hundreds of records were broken and personal bests met or exceeded.
A lot of fun and laughter was also had and many new friends were made, while old acquaintances were definitely not forgotten, further cementing the reputation of the Friendly Games.
There were 3838 registered athletes and officials, and more than 500 volunteers involved in delivering 33 sports over eight days.
But the time for competition will end tonight. Some sports have already wrapped up … and it’s now time to party.
Anzac Oval will once again come to life for the Closing Ceremony and after-party. Connoisseurs of fine music will not be disappointed. The main act is Mark Seymour and the Undertow, who promise to deliver an array of classic hits.
Seymour, of Hunters and Collectors fame, is one of Australia’s most notorious and respected musicians. The ARIA-award winning artist has been delivering rock classics since the very early 80s and is sure to be a crowd pleaser.
Supporting the Undertow is Major Tom, a David Bowie tribute band that has been wowing audiences with the reproduction of David Bowie’s distinctive vocal style.
Opening Ceremony and Mid-week Party favourite Clearway will round out the evening’s entertainment.
Gates open from 5pm. Food and drinks will be available.
