Masters Swimming – Your Chance to Shine
Alice Springs Masters Games swimming program offers a range of events and distances from 50m to 800m, freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, medley’s and relays.
The Alice Springs Swimming Centre is the location for all swimming events and is located within the Games sporting precinct on Speed Street. Swimming is organised by the team at the Alice Springs AUSSI Masters and managed by Glenn Ronan.
“The popularity of AUSSI Masters Events, including Alice Springs Masters Games relates to the strength of opportunities to train with Clubs across Australia. The programs include swimming skills such as water safety but as is the case for Masters swimmers there are programs focused on fitness and enjoyment. These are tailored for various swimming events from pool competitions, triathlons and open water swims,” said Ronan.
With the range of swimming events at the Masters and swimming available to anyone 25 years and above, there is a big focus on encouraging all athletes whatever their ability.
“We love seeing athletes of all shapes and sizes, and the biggest applauses go to those participants who we know are new to participating in a competition or haven’t done it since their younger years,” said Ronan.
“We will also see some fantastic champion swimmers in the water at the Games, including our own Alice AUSSI champion, Kay Bailey. Kay achieved the maximum 1005 points in the national timed swim events, given her national recognition in AUSSI Masters. Emily Procopis and Sarah are two other local champions.
Ronan has experienced the Alice Springs Masters Games as both a visitor and a local. I was a visiting competitor in Alice for the 2004 and 2006 Games, and then after moving here, was a local in 2012, I recommend our Friendly Games to all swimmers and volunteers across Australia. From my experience, Alice offers fantastic Aquatic facilities in a regional town with easy movement in an amazing landscape and being the Friendly Games with the amazing local community, it doesn’t get any better than this.”
