Q&A with Athletics Coordinator Steve Darling
We sit down with Track and Field Coordinator Steve Darling who gives us a bit of background on himself and the competition. Steve is a fully qualified Athletics Official and has worked on the Australian Athletics Championships for the last 20 years. Steve is currently going through the selection process for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
How did you start out in the sport?
I got involved when my children started competing in little athletics. I have done a little bit of throwing but have mainly been involved as an official for the last 20 years.
What has been the highlight of your officiating career?
In 2006 I worked on the Melbourne Commonwealth Games as a technical official. It was a great experience but tough work. In one day I had walked over 40,000 steps!
Why have you been involved in the Alice Springs Masters Games for such a long time?
If Alice Springs did not have the Masters Games, I would not have had the opportunity to put the skills and knowledge I have learnt into practice. It has given me the opportunity to run a large scale competition giving me great experience to put my training into practice.
What events are on offer in Athletics – Track & Field?
Of course there are running events from 100m right up to 3km walk. No hurdles are offered at all. All field events are offered except pole vault.
What do the competitors appreciate most about the Alice Springs Masters Games?
Having fun! There is definitely a serious side to the competition, but people keep coming back because they know that they will enjoy themselves.
